Finally, there was no big John Chow effect. I was expecting much more traffic from my Wavumi Entrecard being displayed one full day on the John Chow Dot Com blog :-(

You can see that the 13th of December was even not my highest traffic day!

It's #1 on my Wavumi Entrecard statistics, but still not very impressive. Taking into account that a 125 x 125 Button Sponsorhip on John Chow Dot Com blog costs $500/month, I was expecting much more traffic... Maybe it was not a good day!

The Bug in the Configuration is Fixed ;-)

There was a bug preventing you to update the configuration of your Widget :-( But, it is now fixed ;-) Thus, you can again change the font, the width, the number of readers, the background, the title and the link colours of your widget. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Widgets Lab did register to Wavumi in order to get the Entrecard coupon, thus I did send him 10 credits. On the other hand, Pam Hoffman is an early adopter of the Wavumi widget - I thank her for that - and did then receive 20 credits! I have not seen her on the Entrecard "Campaign" page so far, but I am sure she will join soon - at least, I will send her a reminder ;-)

You should have noticed that this "contest" was not very popular. I was ready to give away 150 credits, and at the end, I have given 30 credits - I have already used the remaining 120 credits for advertisement ;-) Maybe the number of credits was not sufficient, I think next time I will target one single winner with a prize of 100 credits at least - lesson learned ;-)

I have been addicted to Entrecard.com these last days, I have played a lot with it. I have even sent some feedback to the development team. One of them was about 3rd party cookie, it seems they have the same problem that I encountered at the beginning of the development of Wavumi, see my (old) post How to enable (unblocked) your 3rd party cookie from April 2007. This feedback was appreciated: Wavumi is mentioned a the post Letting your users help you help them written by the guy developing Entrecard.com, and I received an Entrecard coupon for 50 credits.

I have decided to give you these credits as a welcome gift in the Wavumi Community ;-) I will give 10 credits to the first 5 new members. The procedure is the following:

From the beginning of the development of the Wavumi project, I was thinking about promoting it by creating a marketing video. But, I am still searching where to start... On the other hand, I have found two videos I like a lot: the presentation video of BlogRush, as well as the one of Entrecard. The video I would like to create would not be very different from these ones!

Dear All, you have probably noticed that I have not worked a lot on Wavumi recently... I still have to work on other less interesting stuff in order to gain some money ;-) Anyway, I would like to work on it again, and after some deep thoughts, I have decided that the next step will be an upgrade of the design!

But, I am definitively not a designer :-/ Thus, even if it is not really in line with my philosophy, I will "copy" the design of an existing site... And, recently, I have been quite impressed by the success of BlogRush, so I will get some "inspiration" from it ;-)

I have of course some ideas I keep for Wavumi, but I am not sure I will have the time needed to implement them. Thus, would it not be more productive to share them with BlogCatalog and get a chance to win $2,500?

Last night, I have done a major upgrade of the Wavumi's kernel. One reason was to fix the downtime due to the "huge" daily data transfer. But, the main one was the introduction of a new functionality: browse you Wavumi community!

The idea is to show you your Wavumi community using pre-defined "Who are ..." questions. I have started with the following set of questions: Who are ...

What is Wavumi? (2nd Edition)

Definition. Wavumi is a Visitors Tracking Tool. The idea behind Wavumi can be express as the Wavumi's principle:

An author of a web site is likely to visit the web sites authored by its visitors ;-)

I guess that all authors of web sites would agree with this statement.

How does it work? First, you have to register to Wavumi, it is free, simple and quick. It's a two-edit-boxes-and-one-click procedure! At this stage, I have not (yet) implemented any verification procedure requiring an e-mail address. You only need to provide your name (or preferred pseudo) and the URL of your site, then click on the "Register" button, and it's done - you are part of the Wavumi Community.

Being part of the Wavumi Community means that you will be listed in the Recent Readers list when you will visit a site on which the Wavumi widget is installed! You should see a Wavumi widget on the right sidebar on this blog. Next to your name, there will be a little happy smiley ":-)", meaning that Wavumi is optimistic and guess that you like the site you are currently visiting. If you do not agree, you can just click on the smiley to change it into ":-(", which will be shown to the other visitors.

Finally, you can configure and install the Wavumi widget on your site and the get statistics on your visitors and how they feel about your site.

I want to thank Ed again. Ed joined the Wavumi Community on the 17th of April 2007. Wavumi went live on the 12th of April, thus Ed was clearly an early adopter of Wavumi! Ed is the editor of The Pisstakers blog, which is a multi-faceted humor blog covering web, tech, world news and quirky stories. The term Pisstaker has nothing to do with urine, but everything to do with Ed's articles that are somewhat cynical, sarcastic and humorous. For the purists, content is based on genuine events and topics and never strays too far from the truth. I have already thanks Ed within the post Many Thanks to Ed for his Wavumi Review of the 20th of April 2007, because not only he registered to Wavumi, but he also did write a very nice review of Wavumi.

This time, on the 27th of May 2007 to be precised, Ed has written a post about MyBlogLog clones where he shares his thoughts about MyBlogLog, BlogCatalog and ... Wavumi! Ed's words about Wavumi are:

How Do Your Visitors Feel About Your Site?

New Functionality: next each visitor, there is now a little smiley which tells if the visitor did like or not the site. Indeed, Wavumi is starting the optimistic way: when a visitor goes for the first time to a site his name appears with the ":-)" smiley, but from then, the visitor can change his smiley by clicking on it.

As I said before, it is not rocket science, but it is new, i.e. it does not exist at MyBlogLog, nor at BlogCatalog ;-)

I was quite disappointed by the comment from cosmicsurfer on my last post saying that the links towards the Wavumi web site were not working...

I would like to thanks Ed, the editor of the Pisstakers for his review of Wavumi. It was so nice for me to read some lines on Wavumi written by someone else... Thanks again, Ed ;-)

The last week has been quite busy. Indeed, I cannot (yet) put a lot of my time and energy on Wavumi. This is why you have not seen new things coming. Anyway, I am happy to join with you today... to talk again about Wavumi. I have a dream that one day ... Google will buy Wavumi for 16,000,000 $ and that I will not have to work anymore for [the company I am currently working for]. I have a dream today!

In the meantime, I will try to continue to work as much as I can on Wavumi ;-) I am currently developing the customisation of the Wavumi Widget...

This is just a small post to talk about Wavumi on Digg.com, I am so happy to have finalised this first beta version today!

Indeed, I am quite surprised that the Internet is not yet full of MyBlogLog clones in the same way that it is full of Digg clones. By the way, my Wavumi is far from being a MyBlogLog clone, but it is my starting point.

Anyway, it was a great exercise for me to implement it, and for now, I am just hoping to get some beta testers ;-) Thanks in advance for your participation.

How to enable (unblocked) your 3rd party cookie

I have spent a LOT of hours (look at the date of my previous post), just to find out that the way Internet Explorer handles P3P is CRAP...

If you have a problem to get back your cookie, because it is a 3rd-party cookie, DO NOT WORRY, just add the following HTTP header to the page that creates the cookie:

P3P: CP="CAO"

That's it!!!

The Web Design of Wavumi

Today, I have finalised the Web Design of Wavumi. I wanted to go live with some proper (i.e. modern) web design. I will be extremely simple, but it will look (at least, I hope so) like a modern Web 2.0 website.

In addition to that, I have also re-worked on the different posts of this blog. I would like to go live with a decent amount of information about Wavumi in this blog.

Great news! The first version with the complete basic functionnality of the Wavumi service is running on my computer ;-) After only a couple of hours, the proof-of-concept is working fine. Three files only:

An .asp script for the registration
An other .asp script to generate the local javascript of the widget
An XSLT script to generate the HTML code of the recent readers list of the widget.

That's it, and it works well. Three pages of code and I have all the basics functionnality I wanted... I am very happy ;-)

When I started thinking about the technical architecture of the Wavumi service, I was not sure about how to implement a widget. Finally, the implementation of a Widget is quite easy: it's just an <iframe> element. That's quite a good news, I can carry on...

The Wavumi Community can help you to increase the traffic to your web site. The Wavumi's principle is:

At least, it is true for me. When I look to the new visitors from my websites statistics (on Site Meter) I always jump to the refer(r)er URL and go to it. Indeed, this is for me the best way to get more information about your visitors.

The idea behind the Wavumi service is to get an explicit reference of your reader and not a "stolen" HTTP header anymore. Your visitor will consciously pass to you the URL of his website when visiting your website. Of course, it will work only if you are also part of the Wavumi Community, meaning that you will also give the URL of your website each time you visit other websites.

I have to admit that, unfortunatelly, this is not an original idea. Indeed, while thinking about this idea of explicit reference of readers, I have discovered that MyBlogLog does provide such a service. But, finally, I have decided to carry on anyway. At least, I think it will be a very exercise for me if I reached to put my Wavumi service on-line ;-)
